When on Google Earth 116

After finding Felix’s WOGE115, I’m happy to publish the next challenge.  Find the location of the picture on Google Earth and identify the site and the main period of occupation.  The first one to get it correct has to host the next challenge.

I’m still not sure how hard to make these – I think this one is quite easy, but that’s because I’ve been there!  If you get this one too quickly then when I next get the chance I’m going to post a real stinker!

UPDATE

A clue for WOGE116

“Had the apple-thief, the lion-clad demi-god son of Zeus, misheard the name of his multi-headed foe, he may well have laboured -in-vain here.”

UPDATE

So, WOGE116 has at last fallen and been located as the Byzantine fortress of Haidra in Tunisia, close to the Algerian border.  The 6th century fortress is sited within an older Roman settlement and also contains the remains of an early church.  Here’s a picture of the walls of the fortress:

The rules:

Q: What is When on Google Earth?
A: It’s a game for archaeologists, or anybody else willing to have a go!
Q: How do you play it?
A: Simple, you try to identify the site in the picture.
Q: Who wins?
A: The first person to correctly identify the site, including its major period of occupation, wins the game.
Q: What does the winner get?
A: The winner gets bragging rights and the chance to host the next When on Google Earth on his/her own blog!

NOTE: If you leave a comment and it doesn’t appear straight away, please be patient as it seems my spam catcher is being a bit over enthusiastic!

  1. (I’ll be good about the spam catcher). It’s “Broken Pillar”, a deserted temple in the middle of Tanaris, http://images.wikia.com/wowwiki/images/c/ca/Broken_Pillar.jpg – inhabited by Marvon Rivetseeker who has a bundle of really cool quests. Beware of hyenas, small black dragons and…

Oh. Sorry. I was using Wow-wiki instead of Google Earth. But you have to admit it looks like it could be the one :-) (http://www.wowwiki.com/Broken_Pillar)

  2. lol…I think it’s more like Southmoon!

When someone gets it right I’ll publish a picture and you’ll see it really is very similar!

I’ll give it a couple of days then publish a clue if nobody has got it.

  3. A Herculean task it is indeed. And every time I cut one option off, two more rear their ugly heads. Obviously I’m making a classical error…

    • A problem of ‘byzantine’ complexity!

  4. Very interesting WOGE
It’s the Byzantine fortresses at Haïdra, Tunisia, [Ammaedara], built by the command of Justinian in the middle of the 6th century.
But it’s does not look like it!

    • Yes that’s it! I did wonder if anyone would get it! Looking forward to the next one

  5. Congratulations Geoff!!

This one I didn’t even really try, as it seemed to be a Sisyphean task……

  6. Thanks for the byzantine clue;
I figured the ‘turrets’ to be artillery emplacements, probably late colonial large calibre guns, WW1/2 ish, [and perhaps later 88mm], pointing north, and probably towards the coast, which suggests N Africa/ East Med, but I figured the structure was probably started life as Sassanid/Persian/arab, and was a palace /mosque /mausoleum.
Anyway, WOGE 117 is now up at Theoretical Structural Archaeology.
    Good Luck
