After finding Felix’s WOGE122, I’m happy to publish the next challenge. Find the location of the picture on Google Earth and identify the site and the main period of occupation. The first one to get it correct gets to host the next challenge.
This time though I decided on the site before looking at the Google Earth image which wasn’t particularly good, so to make this one a bit easier I’ve also included a wider shot. The wider shot also includes some features in the surrounding landscape which are particularly relevant for this WOGE.
Q: What is When on Google Earth?
A: It’s a game for archaeologists, or anybody else willing to have a go!
Q: How do you play it?
A: Simple, you try to identify the site in the picture.
Q: Who wins?
A: The first person to correctly identify the site, including its major period of occupation, wins the game.
Q: What does the winner get?
A: The winner gets bragging rights and the chance to host the next When on Google Earth on his/her own blog!
NOTE: If you leave a comment and it doesn’t appear straight away, please be patient as it seems my spam catcher is being a bit over enthusiastic!

Mons Claudianus (N 26.808772° E 33.487951°). I have little information, it is a quarry that must have been in use since the time of Augustus, alledgedly the marble columns of the roman Pantheon were extracted from here.
Pretty hard, Chris. I confess that I arrived at the site by the metadata.

Yep! You’ve got it! I wasn’t sure whether to take off the metadata or not, but there you go. It’s a pretty important site and the source for much of the granite used in Rome including some of the columns of the Pantheon and those used in the Basilica Ulpia.
So over to you for the next challenge!
